Ultrasound Body Sculpting May be New Frontier for Plastic Surgeons

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, non-invasive ultrasound body sculpting may be the next technology to treat problem fat.

While they’re still seeking FDA approval, the LipoSonix and UltraShape Contour I systems may offer a surgery-free solution by using focused sound waves to break up fat cells. The low frequency sound vibrates the cells and allows them to move through the body. The cell material is then metabolized through the liver.

Treatments would take about 30 minutes and wouldn’t even require anesthesia. As soon as the procedure is finished, patients can go on with their daily routines.

Doctors say the treatment isn’t a replacement for liposuction, but it’s a way to compliment the procedure or offer patients a non-invasive option.

So far, clinical trials outside the US have shown promise. The procedure has been effective in trouble spots like love handles and saddle bags.
