Rhinoplasty on the Rise Among American Men

It seems men are catching on to the wonders of cosmetic surgery, and over the years it has become accepted for men to undergo said procedures. Each year, more and more men are opting for these surgeries, and it seems they’ve found a favorite: rhinoplasty.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 30,099 men opted for a rhinoplasty in 2010, making it the second most common cosmetic procedure amongst men—beat only by about 7,000 more choosing liposuction. Rhinoplasty wasn’t even on the ASAPS’s top five surgical procedures in women that same year.

Perhaps societal pressures are getting to our male population. Today, men are under as much pressure and scrutiny as women are, and cosmetic surgery is painted as such a quick fix in the media that it seems like an easy option. On the other hand, maybe men finally feel comfortable enough to fix little characteristics that have been bothering them their whole lives. Having the option to smooth bumps, sculpt the nostrils or tip of nose and even straighten out the nose is too good to pass up.

Aside from aesthetic reasons, rhinoplasty is also performed when an individual has trouble breathing, as is the case with a deviated septum or an obstruction. This may result in aesthetic changes as well.
