Haute Living caught up with Dr. Charles Hsu, an exclusive member of The Haute MD Network, about what’s it’s like being one of the top surgeons, specializing in breast augmentation, in the country.
What inspired Dr. Hsu to become a breast surgeon?
I think that for many women, the breast silhouette is an important part of their femininity. It is a very aesthetic part of the female form, and there is a lot of artistic taste that informs the selection of an ideal breast shape for a particular body. These facts taken together made breast surgery very appealing to me! I feel that when I do breast surgery, I get to to use my artistic sensibilities, combined with surgical technique, to improve an area of the body that is of high aesthetic importance.
What is the hottest technique he is offering?
To me, it seems like the procedure most women are most excited about is the breast lift that is performed with a scar only around the areola. While not every breast lift can be performed this way, many can, and this is nice because it eliminates the need for the “inverted-T” or even the “lollipop” scar that is used by so many other surgeons in performing breast lifts.
What is the most rewarding part of the job?
I like seeing patients at their postoperative visits! At that point, they’re happy, they’re excited, and they’re past all their anxiety. It’s very rewarding to make people happy.
Blackberry or iphone?
iPhone for sure … I’m lost without it!
What differentiates Dr. Hsu from other breast surgeons?
I can’t say what differentiates me from all other surgeons, since there are many surgeons out there. I suppose I would just say that personally, it has been very important to me to be the best possible surgeon I could. This is why it was important for me to attend the best educational and medical institutions in this country, back when I was training, so that I could feel confident in my skills and complete in my knowledge and credentials. I felt honored to be able to serve subsequently as clinical faculty at Stanford, and am excited to bring my experience to my current practice in Beverly Hills.
What are the hottest techniques in breast surgery?
Although breast augmentation is the most common breast operation, I’d probably still go with the breast lift that has only a scar around the areola (periareolar mastopexy). That seems to have created a lot of excitement for my patients!
