Prom Season Means Uptick in Teen Chin Augmentation

Dresses, hair, limos and flowers have company on the to-do list for the prom.

Now, add plastic surgery as a more common prep for the traditional end-of-year dance as more and more teenagers are opting for chin augmentation, or “chinplants” as an accessory for the big night.

“At proms in the past, teens would line up for photographs and face the camera. But the rise of more informal images, captured during video chats or by smartphones when they are leaning over a buffet maybe, has shown them angles of their face they had not seen in a mirror,” says Darrick Antell, a spokesman for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

He adds that teen interest in chin augmentation caused a 71 percent increase in surgeries in 2011. Teenagers are also taking on surgeries to pin back prominent ears to enhance their look with their hair worn up.
