Parents Up in Arms Over Implant App

Parents Up in Arms Over Implant App

There is certainly an application for just about anything these days, and most of them are relatively harmless. But some parents are questioning if the app that permits users to see what they would look like with breast implants is appropriate for all ages.

One such app is free to download from the iTunes store and has a maturity rating of 12-plus, which means it is considered appropriate for anyone over the age of 12. However, the fact that you must be over 18 to have plastic surgery without parental consent has some parents concerned.

The app was designed by a US-based plastic surgeon who sought to give women a way to see what they would look like with breast implants. Users upload a picture of them and choose from 17 different implants to get an idea of how they would look after undergoing breast augmentation surgery.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), breast augmentation surgery was the most popular surgical procedure performed by plastic surgeons in 2010, with more than 318,000 individuals undergoing it. It was the most common plastic surgery among women between the ages of 19 and 34, but is also frequent among woman between the ages of 35 and 50 and those 18-years-old and younger.

Parents worry the app is fueling an already rampant trend of teens undergoing cosmetic surgery.
