For patients considering breast augmentation surgery, there are a variety of options for the type of breast implants they choose.
Patients have the option of silicone or saline-filled implants, and they can also choose between round or shaped implants.
Now, a new type of implant has been approved by the FDA that is being called the “Gummy Bear” implant. The new option gets the name because even when the implant is cut in demonstrations, it retains its shape like a gummy bear candy.
Some plastic surgeons say the new implants will resist gravity better and retain their shape longer. The fact that they are more solid also suggests they will be less likely to leak. With silicone implants, doctors recommend an MRI regimen beginning three years after surgery to check for leaks.
With all the options on the table, doctors say it’s more important than ever to consult with a board certified cosmetic surgeon before undergoing breast augmentation surgery.
