Dr. Robert L. Cucin M.D. FACS

Having practiced in Manhattan for more than 25 years, Robert L. Cucin, MD FACS now also brings his skills and experience to patients in the Palm Beaches.  There he founded and directed the American Institute of Plastic Surgery, a free-standing fully accredited ambulatory plastic surgical facility in a land marked Beaux Arts town house where patients could have their surgery,  receive over-night nursing care with a doctor on call and cooked meals, and be chauffeured home by liveried staff.

Robert L. Cucin, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a Diplomate of three boards – the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Board of Surgery, and the American Board of Legal Medicine.  He received both his general and plastic surgical training at The New York Hospital—Cornell Medical Center where he remains a member of the attending surgery staff.  He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of International College of Surgeons of which he was appointed Vice-Regent.

He served as a major in the U.S.A.F as Chief of Surgery in a mixed base hospital in Misawa Japan between his General Surgery and Plastic Surgery Residencies.

He received his B.A. from Cornell University from which he graduated magna cum laude in chemistry and with distinction in all subjects and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Epsilon Delta and Phi Eta Sigma honoraries.   He received his M.D. from Cornell Medical College and also earned a J.D. from Fordham Law School and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School.

Dr. Cucin has authored five books, over two dozen contributions to the medical literature, and as evidence of his artistic nature, a ballet piano score.   He pioneered new methods of breast reconstruction which involved cryopreservation of the nipple.  He is also the inventor of power assisted liposuction and holds 16 patents on liposuction devices and methods and has another 24 patent applications pending.

A prolific Mensan inventor, he established Rocin Laboratories, Inc. to Research and develop his novel ideas for biomedical improvements and BioSculpture Technology, Inc. to develop and manufacture medical devices and procedures for optimizing fat metabolism and distribution.  The Airbrush Liposculpture® Centers of New York City, the Palm Beaches, and Los Angeles are the clinical outgrowths of that research to improve the results of liposuction, the experience of the patient undergoing it, and the control the surgeon has on body reshaping.

His consistent emphasis has been and still is on securing the very best possible result utilizing advanced techniques geared at improving both the patient’s and surgeon’s evaluation of the surgical result and experience.  Although Dr. Cucin is well-skilled and practiced in all aspects of cosmetic surgery of the face, neck, breast and body as well as reconstructive procedures on the breast, nose and plastic surgery gone awry, his principal emphasis in the Palm Beaches is on liposuction.

Dr. Cucin’s current interest show cases the ability of the Airbrush Liposculptor® manufactured by BioSculpture Technology’s to safely remove larger volumes of fat during ambulatory liposuction procedures.  The device was independently inspected and cleared by the F.D.A. in a 510(k).  Its gentler-by-design tube-within-a-tube Twin Cannula Assisted Liposuction (TCAL) spares the patient the thousands of battering ram impacts of the advancing cannula and facilitates increased control, lesser bruising, shorter convalesce, and improved skin contraction.  There is no risk of burns and a lesser chance of fluid collections as the cannulas do not get warm as do those of LASER or Ultrasound devices.  This makes superficial liposuction to maximize skin contraction much, much safer.

As fat cells are a 50 times richer source of mesenchymal stem cells than bone marrow, more gentle aspiration without heat promotes great viability for autografting for wrinkle correction or Brazilian butt lifts.

Dr. Cucin is particularly interested in assisting overweight or frankly obese patients to reduce their waist-to-hips ratios.  This ratio of the circumference of a patient’s waist to one’s hips is a risk factor for metabolic syndrome which is associated with insulin resistance, type 2 Diabetes mellitus a bad lipid profile hypertension, strokes, and heart attacks.  Fat is a noxious hormone factory secreting cytokines that reduce the metabolic rate, promote insulin resistance, stimulate hunger, and promote inflammation.  This is why it is so difficult to lose weight and keep it off.  Substantial liposuction interventions concentrating on the more metabolically active waistline fat have been shown clinically to have health as well as the obvious cosmetic benefits.

His inventions have already changed the liposuction device landscape with licenses to United American Medical, NuMed Medical, Byron Medical and Mentor.  But his patented devices and methods for removing visceral fat, i.e. fat within the abdomen, endoscopically may revolutionize the treatment of obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 Diabetes mellitus by replacing invasive bariatric surgery such as lap banding, stomach stapling and gastric bypass with endoscopic visceral fat removal which does not involve cutting into the bowel or leaving behind a foreign body.  He hopes his legacy will be replacing that surgery which he considers barbaric and all too likely to create nutritional cripples with a gentler, minimally invasive treatment.  But that’s still a little into the future.

For the present, Dr. Cucin can offer patients liposuction and waistline reduction by subcutaneous liposuction in larger than traditional volumes.  TCAL changes liposuction from an operation of inches to an operation of pounds.  Serial liposuction procedures may be carried out as an outpatient at short intervals and when necessary coupled with short incision, minimal undermining skin excisions to safely and esthetically remove 20-40 pounds.  As two thirds of the population is now overweight and one-third of it frankly obese, there is no shortage of afflicted patients for whom TCAL provides a welcome solution.  He looks forward to assisting you with this stubborn and dangerous problem which not only lessens the quality of your life but shortens it.

Dr. Cucin’s West Palm Beach office is located in Okeechobee Plaza, a commercial complex befitting his association with BioSculpture Technology’s medical research and design facility; it provides ample parking and enhanced privacy.  All surgery is performed elsewhere in a facility accredited at the highest level such as the Laser and Surgical Center of the Palm Beaches and overnight convalescent care is available for his patients.
