Dr. Lara Devgan, MD, MPH is a Yale-educated, Johns Hopkins Medical School-instructed, and Columbia/ New York Presbyterian Hospital-trained plastic & reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Devgan has expertise in a wide variety of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Her primary clinical interests are cosmetic facial and body surgery, and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer and skin cancer. She is an attending plastic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital, Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Infirmary, the New York Presbyterian Healthcare System, and Greenwich Hospital. Dr. Devgan is fully licensed and credentialed in the practices of medicine and surgery in New York and Connecticut.

Dr. Devgan has spoken nationally and internationally on numerous surgical topics and has published extensively in the medical literature. Her original research has been featured in quality-controlled and peer-reviewed publications including Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Annals of Plastic Surgery, The Lancet, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Annals of Surgical Oncology, Academic Medicine, American Journal of Medicine, Molecular Microbiology, Journal of Burns and Wounds, andAmerican Journal of Surgery. She has been invited to give lectures and presentations at surgical meetings in New York, London, Toronto, Cairo, Montreal, Chicago, Boston, New Orleans, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Phoenix. Her research and writing contributions have been published in the New York Times and on ABC News.

Dr. Devgan is one of an extremely select group of plastic surgeons to have received a training grant from the National Institutes of Health to fund her surgical outcomes research, and she sits on the editorial consultancy board of The Lancet, one of the world’s preeminent medical journals. She is a peer reviewer for Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the official journal of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, and sat on the editorial board of Aesthetic Surgery and Medicine. She is a medical expert for ABC News, served as a judge for the Medical Society of the State of New York Resident & Fellow Abstract Competition, and contributed extensively to the Project ImpACT, a National Institutes of Health funded project at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, focused on building a database of the most important randomized controlled trials in medicine.

EDUCATION

Dr. Devgan completed her undergraduate pre-medical education at Yale University, where she graduated cum laude, with Departmental Honors & Distinction, and won the Adams Cup trophy, multiple Sudler Grants, and the President’s Public Service Fellowship. She was elected to the TheElihu Society, an honor bestowed on 16 of 5,000 students at Yale.

She obtained her medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, which has been ranked the #1 hospital in the nation for 21 consecutive years, where she was awarded the Henry Strong Denison Award for Medical Investigation and the Harry G. Saltzstein Prize for Medical Writing for her exceptional contributions to research and writing.

During medical school, Dr. Devgan won travel grants to do elective rotations at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan– widely considered one of the preeminent microsurgical training institutes in the world– and the renowned UCLA Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where she studied immunodeficiency and craniofacial syndromes. In addition, she was recognized with awards from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation for Humanism in Medicine, the American College of Physicians Medical Student Abstract Contest, and the DRADA Grant for neuroscience research. During her final year of medical school, Dr. Devgan was invited to address an international audience in Cairo, Egypt after winning the highly competitive Lancet & Global Forum for Health Research essay contest. As a result of her remarks in Egypt, Dr. Devgan was invited to be the youngest Editorial Consultant ever appointed to the board of The Lancet medical journal, at the age of 27.

Dr. Devgan obtained her masters degree in public health, with a concentration in epidemiology and biostatistics, from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, which is ranked the #1 public health school in the world. This was funded by a highly selective T32 Predoctoral Clinical Research Fellowship grant from the National Institutes of Health.

TRAINING

Dr. Devgan completed her residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the esteemed New York Presbyterian Hospital, the University Hospital of Columbia & Cornell, which is consistently ranked the #1 hospital in New York by U.S. News & World Report. During her training, Dr. Devgan worked extensively in the fields of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery at some of the world’s most renowned hospitals: Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, Lenox Hill Hospital, The Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, and Harlem Hospital. She also completed focused training in the Burn Intensive Care Unit at Cornell and the Division of Hand Surgery at the Columbia Department of Orthopedics. Dr. Devgan completed her prerequisite three years of General Surgery internship and residency at Columbia University Medical Center. This included training in surgical oncology, abdominal surgery, vascular surgery, transplant surgery, trauma surgery, pediatric surgery, and thoracic surgery.

During her training, Dr. Devgan won the prestigious “Scientific Exhibit of Exceptional Merit” from the American College of Surgeons for her novel research on surgical disease burden in the developing world. This work was featured in an official press release by the American College of Surgeons and covered in national and international news media. Dr. Devgan was twice honored as a finalist for the Gaspar W. Anastasi Award from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  She won recognition for the best fracture reduction on an anatomic model of the skull among chief residents & fellows from AONA’s “Principles of Operative Treatment of Craniomaxillofacial Trauma & Reconstruction.”
