Since 1973 Dr Puig has been actively involved in the practice of hair restoration surgery. Dr. Puig is a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, and the Diplomate, and a Past President of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery Dr Puig has been a respected educator in the field for many years, presenting papers and surgical demonstrations on many topics including: diagnostic and surgical techniques, practice ethics, marketing, management and continuous quality improvement, physician and technician education. In 2010 He joined the staff at the Baylor College of Medicine, Baylor facial plastic surgery center, in Houston to help start their hair restoration surgery program.
A founding Member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), Dr. Puig has served has served that professional organization as chair of the ISHRS Fellowship Training Committee, completing the new Guidelines for ISHRS Fellowship Training Programs and expanding the available programs from three to seven during his tenure. He has also served as chair of the ISHRS Core Curriculum Committee, polishing the Core Curriculum and Core Competencies documents for publication in Dermatological Surgery. An enthusiastic educator, Dr Puig has also Chaired the ISHRS Task Force on Physician & Surgical Assistants Training, The first hands on Basics Course for Hair Restoration Surgeons, and the first series of Webinars for the ISHRS. In 2006 Dr. Puig was elected to the Board of Governors of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. In 2009 he was elected to the office of Treasurer for the Society, and currently Dr. Puig is serving as the Vice President and President-elect of that organization.
While servicing as President of the American Hair Loss Council (AHLC), in 1995, that organization responded to the public’s request that Hair Restoration Surgeons develop a standard measure of competence with in their field; so in the fall 1996, Puig organized a meeting of representatives from the AACS, AAFPS, ASDS, ADA, AHLC, and the ISHRS to discuss the need for and possible development of a Board of Examiners in the field of hair restoration surgery. The consensus opinion of the 18 attendees, all respected senior hair restoration surgeons, was that hair restoration surgery had indeed evolved into a complex blending of several diagnostic and surgical skills; and that the core curriculum associated with competency was complex enough to warrant development of standardized exam the public could use to benchmark didactic expertise. Over the next few months the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery was incorporated, and Dr. Puig was elected to the Treasurers post. Over the next 8 years Dr. Puig served that organization as its Treasurer, Vice President, President Oral Exam Editor.
Being somewhat of a contemporary renaissance man, Dr. Puig has interests outside of cosmetic and hair restoration surgery. An accomplished musician, working as an independent jazz musician, he plays bass is several jazz bands around Houston. A born again Christian, Puig has worked with Living Water International (LWI), a Christian ministry that trains and equips Christians in the third world to drill fresh water wells for their communities, and assists third world Christian physicians in caring for their communities.
