Low-Chemical Nail Polish Lasts as Long as Regular

Non-toxic polish

Nail polishes of today are safer than nail polishes of the past, but in the time when everything from shampoo to snacks are boasting the labels “all-natural” and “organic,” a truly natural nail polish is nowhere to be found. Previously, nail polish contained some dangerous chemicals including formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and tolulene. Most major brands including Essie, OPI, and L’Oreal have long since phases these out, and call the new formula “three free.”

Polishes that call themselves organic have removed another two harmful chemicals, formaldehyde resin and camphor. They use a resin without formaldehyde to make polish long lasting, and less harmful solvents and plasticizers to help the polish stick to your nails. The more natural lacquers should last the same length of time without chipping as it’s more toxic varieties, according to cosmetic chemist James Hammer. Variations in how long polishes last are due to application technique and proper nail prep, not the chemicals it contains.
