HLMD Member Dr. Carlos J Puig Shares His Inspirations Toward Quality Care

Dr. Carlos J Puig

Most times we view doctors as a function of their profession, never asking why they chose their field, until now. HLMD member Dr. Carlos J. Puig shares what drove him to Medicine and the impact it has had on him and his patients.

Why did you choose to go the path of a medical profession, and what inspired to choose your specialty?

I have always been fascinated by the biological sciences. Love animals, and planned a veterinary career, but changed my mind in my Sr. Year at the University of Florida, and applied to med school instead.  I always enjoyed the arts, I am a part time jazz musician, the cosmetic surgery seems the natural place for me.  I soon developed a passion for hair restoration surgery, and have spent the last 40 years doing it. I can to make the results of my surgeries as natural as possible.

How do you make your patients feel more at ease when it comes to performing the more rigorous procedures?

Personal attention, from me and my staff, is a key focus for us.  A physician’s staff is a true reflection of the physician’s priorities.  Our team does all we can to give the patient a comfortable environment and the best possible results.

What makes you stand out from the other doctors in your area? Include a list of the organizations and/or medical networks you are a part of, as well as any mission trips you have been a part of.

I am the most senior Hair Restoration Surgeon in Texas, just starting my 40th year in the profession.  I have done over 23000 procedures over the years.  I am a past President of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery, and the President of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), (as of 19 October 2012).  I have authored 8 chapters for different text books on the subject, and continue to work in clinic science research for the field.

What is most rewarding about being a in your field?

Patients feel better about themselves because of the procedures we do.

Has a patient ever gone far and beyond to thank you for your relationship with him or her? If so, explain in detail what your patient did.

Yes, they have mentioned me on the radio and TV and sent many referrals.  Also, I have had patients send gifts to the office, fine wines, and allow be to stay at their properties in the Caribbean and Italy.

What would patients and Haute MD readers find to be the most surprising about your medical profession?

I am readily available, my patients have my cell number, and I often answer the phone line in the office myself.  Many are surprised that I answer their email questions personally.

What are you most excited about in your professional future?

We are constantly improving the natural look of our results.  We are currently working on a new medical treatment for woman with hair loss, and I think it will show great promise.

If you were to retire tomorrow, what would you miss most?

I would miss having fun with the patients and staff.
