Being a health enthusiast, it is most difficult to stick to your methods when being social. Whether that is at a wedding, a dinner party, or a birthday celebration, as a social butterfly, an occasional drink or two always is tempting. Not to mention, surrounded by the array of sugary drinks, it is often difficult to chose the most health-conscious option. Take the classic rum and coke for example. Just one drink features an average of 215 calories; just three of those pack enough calories to make up an entire meal! That is over 600 calories in just drinks! In addition, most alcohols are made with grain, rye, barley, or corn based, which increases inflammation in your body, thus increasing your risks of cancers, heart disease, pancreatitis and diabetes.
As even one drink can upset the careful diet plan you’ve been working so hard on maintaining, it is critical to know which options are least caloric and damaging to your body.
For many years, red wine was unquestionably considered “beneficial in moderation”. And even though it is one of the better options to chose on a night out, it is no longer certain whether it is as beneficial as prior stated. Like all others, wine is alcohol, which unquestionably still dehydrates cells in our body, thus shrinking them down, and killing some. The combination of the dehydration, the sugar, and the toxins, not only alters our sleep patterns, but also accelerates age process by triggering inflammatory responses in our bodies. However, made with grapes and not grain, wine is still superior choice over grain liquors and especially beer. Being lower in claories than most mixed drinks out there, wine still remains a superior choice for many.
Liquors with soda or tonic with some extra lime is also one of the more simple, lower calorie options. However, try to choose soda over tonic, as the sugar in the tonic can add up at the end of that fun night. Try adding extra lime and cucumber slices in the soda water for extra flavor.
Choosing the right liquor is also important. Even though all around 100 calories per shot, the effects of the drink on your body may vary based on what the liquer itself is made from. And even though no acohol is harmless to our bodies, it is only rational to pick the lesser evil. Being made out of blue agave and not grain, tequila is least inflammatory of all. Choosing tequila soda with extra lime will not only spear your extra calories, but also make a smooth drink.

In conclusion, Alcohol itself is certainly detrimental to your health; raises blood sugar, stops growth hormone production, dehydrates the body, has toxic by-products that spread throughout the body, overworks the liver to remove the toxins, etc., etc. However, if you are going to drink, try to chose one of the lesser evils stated above in moderation. And even though at times it is difficult to resist the many temptations around us, in the end, you will only thank yourself for making a wiser, more health-conscious choice.
