Botox: How Young is Too Young?

Botox Surgery

The use of collagen, also known as Botox, is a household term, with almost 3 million doses of the serum injected in 2011 alone. While the majority of individuals who get Botox are older than 35, doctors say that the anti-aging treatment is becoming more popular amongst men and women as young as 20 years old.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, more than 15% of individuals between the ages of 19 and 34 underwent the non-surgical procedure in 2010. Doctors say that many of the younger patients receiving Botox don’t use it to eliminate existing fine lines and wrinkles, but instead are getting Botox to avoid the wrinkles from forming in the first place.

Some celebrities under the age of 30, such as Kim Kardashian and Megan Fox, have publicly admitted to using Botox for preventative reasons. Although it has been shown that patients who have been getting preventative Botox for more than a decade have garnered great results and few side effects, there is still no concrete proof that can confirm whether Botox injections can truly “prevent” wrinkles. Using Botox for preventative reasons does not assure less need for Botox in the future, and how much is needed depends solely on the criteria of the individual and not their age
