How time flies. On April 15, Botox Cosmetic celebrates its 10th birthday. Ever since gaining approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in 2002, Botox surgery has been smoothing lines for patients, becoming one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures used in the US. While Botox is primarily used for cosmetic beauty, the drug serves a variety of medicinal purposes, including the treatment of eye spams, cervical dystonia, back pain, severe sweating and muscle stiffness.
Botox is created from Botulinum Toxin Type A, which is a natural poison. In low doses, the toxin temporarily paralyzes small muscles. Each treatment can last up to four months, ranging in costs from several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on what level of treatment is required. Prior to its creation and approval, the only drug of its type was collagen, which had limited results at best.
Although Botox surgery has been a popular and wildly successful plastic surgery procedure, any treatment of this sort should only be done by the hands of the best plastic surgeons available.
