Avocados are the New Superfood

New research from the Center for Human Nutrition at UCLA found that Hass avocados have health benefits for your heart. Their study evaluated two groups of people. The first ate a diet of burgers. The second ate burgers with slices of avocado on top. The study found that the group who ate burgers with avocados had better heart health, including lower levels of inflammation, lower triglyceride levels, and better blood flow in key arteries. High inflammation indicators and high triglyceride levels can lead to arterial narrowing or clogs, and are both risk factors for heart disease.

Avocados are rich in nutrients that can provide a host of other health benefits, including fiber, vitamin E, carotenoids, and heart healthy mono-unsaturated fats. However, it is important not to go overboard. Avocados are high in calories, and only a moderate portion size is needed for the health benefits. Much like almonds, and olives, the healthy fats should be used to enhance already healthy meals, and provide richness.
